Writing & Spelling
Writing Expectations
At Thornden wood, we use high quality texts from the Power of Reading scheme. We develop children’s love of books and writing through drama, speaking and listening, and writing activities. Children have many opportunities to discuss, debate and develop their ideas. Writing skills are taught progressively throughout the school and are scaffolded to enable children of all abilities to make progress. Children are given frequent opportunities for extended writing and are taught and encouraged to edit and find ways to improve their work. Handwriting is taught initially following the ELS handwriting scheme, with consistent letter formation throughout the school. Once children are in year 2, and are ready, they are encouraged to join their writing and when writing is consistent they are expected to write in pen.
Intent, Implementation & Impact
Spelling
Once children reach Year 2, they will be taught their spellings through ELS Essential Spelling. This includes daily and weekly spelling activities that are built on the fundamentals of teaching spelling with strong phonic foundations. Children are taught how to learn their spellings, following spelling patterns and rules which are built upon progressively throughout years 2-6.
